Take me to the Graveyard and other poems eBook Chabu
Charles Buckett, the author, sent me a copy of this book at my request as part of an interview we are preparing for my website. This short chapbook is structured as an autobiographical sampling of poems from various stages of his life, reflecting on disappointments and turmoils in a life that has had more downs than ups. Some of these are short lyrical poems; some are songs with complete refrains, such as the title poem "Take Me to the Graveyard." The songs become stronger when you set them to music. Sitting with my Kindle app, I invented a blues melody and sang through "Take Me to the Graveyard" and found that it worked very well.
The quality of the poetry is uneven -- especially with respect to the changes made in diction and meter in order to create a lot of the couplets -- but unevenness is what one would expect from work that has been composed over some forty years. And there are some definite prizes in the collection, such as Charles' collection of wry tweets "#statefairtime," and the folk-like lament "Old Car Woes." And clearly, this poetry is sincere at every stage -- there is none of the flatness or posturing that one often finds in contemporary poesy.
Charles Buckett isn't a professional poet, like many with whom I went to graduate school, who were technically masterful but whose poetry was bland and uptight. He's a genuine voice of the people, a man of sensitivity, depth, and genuine feeling, and that makes this book well worth the reading. I had my favorites. You will too.
