The tide is turning and the forces of the Empress are making inroads into King Stephen's lands. The Warlord of the North rides south to help the Earl of Gloucester with one final push to dislodge the Usurper but fate has a twist in the tail. There is much treachery as well as barons who fail to deliver on their promises. One thing is consistent; the Warlord's mission to restore the crown to the rightful ruler.

Hosker comes through again with a continuation of a great series
Always enjoy

I enjoyed this book as I have the 10 before. Characters are alive with emotions an d brave hearts. If your not reading this series then you are missing out v
Characters are well developed and there are enough plot twists to keep it interesting. A bit melodramatic at times, but not enough to detract from the plot.
Picks right up where the last book in the series ended. Very enjoyable read, now I am ready for the next chapter in this characters life. Very descriptive narrative about life in the times of this fellow in history.
This being the tenth novel of this series, obviously the author is doing something right. Author keeps his reader glued to the pages. The characters continued to develop, always waiting for his next installment.
As I say at the onset of all my reviews of Hosker's books past the first one in a series "DON'T START HERE!" But if you have been along for the ride of Alfraed fighting for the Empress Maud and to make sure that Henry II gets on the throne, then this book fits right into the ongoing story line. But the weight of all that has been created is starting to weigh now, and it shows in the confusion, the short thrift, the rapid changes in direction. Overall, this is not one of the stronger entries in the series. I gave it four stars because of the depiction of the battle of Lincoln, and the scenes that followed.

The bad first. Hosker has decided to turn Robert, the Earl of Gloucster and some of his associates into a proto-villain, as demonstrated at the end of the last book. This is never wrestled with, and instead Alfraed does his usual bit of challenging everybody to single combat, even the Earl, and nobody ever taking him up on it anymore. It has gotten to be a shtick, and it is tired. I am not read enough into the actual history of the Anarchy to know how the battles ebbed and flowed prior to Lincoln, but despite Alfraed never losing, the overall lack of clear plan, the disappearance of his son William and his newly born son from the story, and the slow erasing of the Varangians and other knights who have been a part of this tale now without any meaningful consequences or reason are all not good. Characters that have meaning are cast aside and killed off, not in the manner that some other stories utilize to advance the plot or make a point, but in a callous manner because they have become dead weight to a writer who does not appear to use storyboards or plot outlines.

Alfraed does what he has always done, rides from here to there with his trusty oathsworn, makes a couple more knights, builds a couple more castles, fights a couple more battles and wins them all. He stands faithfully by Maud, is gracious and fair to all his people, and does all so at the age of 40 now, with serious, almost fatal injuries in his past.

All that said, everything you enjoyed before is back again. The horses are no longer Scout and Star and seem to no longer play as critical a role. the enemies continue to be interchangeable pieces with the exception of Stephen the Usurper, who comes into his own in this book. Dick, Wulfric, Harold, Tristan, Alf, and the coterie of squires (absent Leofric, since Normandy has vanished) all get to do their part. The highlight is the battle of Lincoln, and it is well done, but even then Hosker has attempted to give the book gravitas throughout by making Alfraed more morose and reflective. He does not once think about his most faithful of men at arms, Roger of Lincoln who fell in Normandy, while fighting outside his home. The issue of confusing characters raises its head again, as another woman named Maud is thrown into the fray. While this is likely based upon historical accuracy, Hosker does nothing to mitigate the problem.

His places continue to be empty vessels, described with a cursory glance at the fortifications or markets, the people are one dimensional ghosts that drift by once their purpose is fulfilled, and Alfraed stands true over it all. I enjoy these books for their simplicity, and am hooked now to see how Hosker will write the eventual transition of power (spoiler, in actual history Robert of Gloucester is captured and traded for Stephen, who eventually agrees to make Henry his heir, dying shortly thereafter). If you are not equally committed, there is no point in spending the money.
